Avalon Gel Pen

One of U Brands’ key products are our high quality and fashion forward pens. While our existing base designs for felt and ballpoint pens had proven successful, there was a clear opportunity to expand into gel pens with a distinct new design. I was tasked with creating this form under several key constraints: it needed to feature the signature U Brands “U”-shaped clip, maintain a straight barrel to accommodate patterned wraps, and deliver a look that felt entirely unique.

As a lover of vintage design, I began by studying the proportions and detailing of classic bullet pens, seeking to capture their timeless appeal within the parameters of modern manufacturing. Early sketch explorations focused on balancing a clean, cylindrical barrel with subtle character-defining details. In CAD, I iterated on form language, experimenting with facets, tapers, and transitions until I arrived at a design that felt both minimal and distinctive.

This pen is now a key item for U Brands at Target and Walmart year round.
